Christmas 2019 Star Wars Kits

After three consecutive years, I guess I can say it is now a yearly tradition for someone to buy me a Star Wars model kit as a holiday gift. This year was a bit extra, in that three people got me Star Wars kits.

Right off the bat, I can tell that these are all going to be roughly the same size and difficulty as the 1/144th scale X-Wing/Y-Wing two pack I built back in 2018 (the fact that two of these kits are also two packs is a dead giveaway). I am of two minds when it comes to this size kit. On one hand, I am impressed with how much detail they are able to cram into such small kits. I also find them extremely … cute? I think I actually like the tiny X-Wing better than my bigger 172 scale version. It packs in just enough detail to be clearly recognizable as an X-Wing, but not so much as to make for a complicated or error prone build.

On the other hand, these tiny kits require very little assembly. Detailing work is all the work to be done here, and in my experience, builds which are dominated by one particular phase (trimming, assembly, painting, detailing, etc) can become tiring and frustrating. Doing fine grained detail on kits this size is doable, but it takes a lot of time and patience, and errors can prove costly. This is all to say that while I plan on building these, I may not build them all at once, lest it drive me crazy.

Anyway, here is what I have as part of my Christmas 2019 Haul:

Tiny X-Wing

Here we have an X-Wing in a tiny box. Something tells me this is going to be the exact same kit as the 1/144th scale X-Wing I built last year.

Millenium Falcon & Corellian Corvette

A weird pairing. Maybe they were going for a “Han Solo and Princess Leia’s ships” theme.

I imagine these two are going to be tricky. Non-Imperial ships are a lot … messier in design, which makes detailing trickier.

Second Death Star & Star Destroyer

The prospect of the Second Death Star as a model kit is intriguing. Being all unfinished and asymmetric, there is opportunity for some interesting layers and levels of detail.

As for the Star Destroyer, I think this may be the Star Wars spaceship that works best as a model kit. Simple, streamlined and symmetric, a well done Star Destroyer model, placed on a simple stand, looks intimidating without even trying.

And that’s it! I will report with fresh posts as I make progress building these. For now, Happy Holidays, and may the Force be with you.
